Earth Day to May Day 2025

Earth Day to May Day Webinar – Monday, April 14, 8 PM ET

The EcoAction Committee of the Green Party of the United States is organizing its annual Earth Day to May Day Webinar on Monday April 14 at 8 PM ET. You can register for the zoom link at https://www.gp.org/earthdaymayday2025

The Earth Day to May Day theme highlights the interconnection between critical issues such as climate change, environmental justice, worker and immigrant rights, peace, anti-racism, and biodiversity. The Green Party in 2010 initiated the call for an ecosocialist Green New Deal, which combined a call for a ten year conversion to zero greenhouse gas emissions and 100% clean renewable energy with a strong Economic Bill of Rights (single payer health care, living wage jobs and guaranteed income for all, housing, free college education) that centered on environmental justice and a Just Transition, along with public power.

The United States – and the planet – are facing existential challenges from accelerating climate change and the determination by Donald Trump to establish a dictatorship to further enrich himself and fellow oligarchs. The role of civil society and the rule of law are rapidly being dismantled. The webinar will explore these issues and provide examples of actions that people can take in their own communities.

The webinar will feature three speakers: Marlena Fontes, Anthony Karefa Rogers-Wright; and Mark Dunlea.

Marlena Fontes was a union organizer for 13 years with SEIU Local 32BJ and the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) before shifting to work full time in the climate movement in 2023. I am the organizing director with Climate Organizing Hub and a founding member of Climate Families NYC. The Hub helped organize the Summer of Heat Civil Disobedience protests in NYC targeting Citibank as the largest financier of fossil fuel projects. On Saturday, April 19th in Manhattan they are organizing Our City, Our Fight Nuestra Ciudad, Nuestra Luchahttps://www.summerofheat.org/migrantmarch

Anthony Karefa Rogers-Wright is an international climate and racial justice advocate, and a people-centered human rights practitioner. He is also a policy analyst and advisor for numerous lawmakers at all levels of government and candidates for political office His first book, “Good Friday: The Death of the US Climate Movement and Pathways to Its Resurrection” is scheduled for release in Fall 2025. Anthony is a proud and active member of the Black Alliance for Peace and Movement for Black Lives.  Some recent articles: https://www.blackagendareport.com/unprincipled-unstrategic-and-unsustainable-eulogy-us-climate-movementhttps://progressive.org/magazine/global-crisis-demands-local-responses-rogers-wright/https://mronline.org/2025/03/14/the-fog-of-class-war/

Mark Dunlea is Secretary of EcoAction and author of Putting out the Planetary Fire. On behalf of 350 NYC, he has organized the decade long campaign to get both the NYC and NYS pension funds to divest from fossil fuels. He is a core organizer of SHARE, which led the successful fight to stop Governor Cuomo from adding on new fracked gas turbines in an environmental justice neighborhood. They are now working to convert the state Capitol to 100% renewable energy (e.g., geothermal) and to shut down the polluting plants that for more than a century has burnt coal, oil, trash, and now gas. Mark will also overview the pending cuts at EPA.
