Democrats climate budget bill is too little, too late

A Green Perspective by Mark Dunlea, Co-Chair of the EcoAction Committee of the Green Party of the United States While the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 drafted by Senators Machin and Schumer may represent the largest U.S investment to date on climate, it falls far short of the Green New Deal (GND) first called for by the Green Party in the U.S. in 2010 and fails to cut emissions fast enough to keep global warming below the 1.5 degree Celsius target. The Green Party first began calling for a Green New Deal in the U.S. in 2010. It combined a 10-year timeline for a transition to 100% clean renewable energy and zero emissions with an Economic Bill of Rights focused on a guaranteed living wage job, universal health care (expanded and Improved Medicare for All), housing, and education. Manchin agrees to a Green New Deal to break Climate Budget impasse

Senator Joe Manchin, in a stunning reversal, announced today that he is selling all his holdings in coal companies and wants to replace President Biden’s Build Back Better proposal with a more robust Green New Deal. “I finally got around to reading the reports from the IPCC and I was stunned to learn how fast climate change is occurring. My ten grandchildren also really opened up my eyes about the need to give their generation a chance for a decent living. It is never too late to admit that you have made a mistake,” said Manchin.
