Fellow Greens, as this year of 2017 gets underway, I want to say how thankful I am to be entering such a time of opportunity to do good work for our communities, our families, and our common public benefit. Times of challenge galvanize us to be better, and to show Oregon and the nation what "better" really looks like when it goes to work, and with the Pacific Green Party I welcome and thank you for stepping into this vital moment alongside me.

Why We March

On January 21, 2017, just one day after the polemic spewing Donald Trump was inaugurated President, millions of women across the globe came together to send a message. For the past year and a half, the world has watched horrified while he pushed the boundaries of what a person hoping to gain public trust can say aloud. As his racist, sexist, xenophobic, islamophobic hateful rhetoric stepped up, we were appalled. Worse yet was the fact that he seemed to be gaining support. It was this fact that scared us the most. His supporters, emboldened by their numbers, who felt it appropriate to brought us to doubt humanity.

Post-Inauguration Events, First Administration Actions

As January comes to a close, we have now seen the first actions of the Trump administration. Millions have sustained consistent waves of protest since the Inauguration to say they do not consent to Trump's inheritance of the imperial presidency, which immediately continued the policy of drone strikes and banned entrants from all the Muslim countries that have been targeted since 9/11. Subservience of energy policy to industry concerns is assured. Clearly, the wheels of empire grind on.

Greens Abroad

Two weeks ago, after a new election was held in Austria following a challenge to the vote results in May, the first Green President in the world, Alexander Van der Bellen, was (re)elected. His win of both elections demonstrates Greens' ability to successfully impede the efforts of “far-right" forces re-emerging across the First World. But what about the integrity of the electoral process in our country?

As we approach this traditional Harvest Holiday, we contemplate the gratitude and love for our community that motivates us to work toward a world in which considerations for people, peace, and planet are placed above profit in our social priorities.
