Coronavirus 2020 — Green Party National and State Responses

"COVID-19 has exposed how poorly prepared the U.S. healthcare system is to handle an epidemic,” said Green Party National Co-Chair Margaret Flowers, who also serves on the Board of Advisors to Physicians for a National Health Program. “We've missed the window for containing the virus through screening, testing and monitoring infected people and their contacts — as they did in China, South Korea and other countries. And so we can expect millions of cases.” Flowers also warned that “getting ill in the United States carries the extra burden of potential financial ruin. We need to move to a National Improved Medicare for All health system and paid medical leave as rapidly as possible."

Green Party Calls for Cuomo’s Resignation and Legislature Investigation

ALBANY, NY (March 5, 2021) – Green Party of New York officers today called for the resignation of Governor Andrew Cuomo and reiterated their Feb. 12 demand for his investigation and impeachment by the Legislature after the latest revelations in the nursing home and sexual harassment scandals. Party officers stated the news high-level Cuomo staffers rewrote a report to hide the true extent of nursing home deaths and the ignoring of Gov. Cuomo’s own executive order on referring sexual harassment allegations to the Governor’s Office of Employee Relations (GOER) in the case of Charlotte Bennett are examples of ongoing abuse of power by Gov. Cuomo and should be investigated as such by the Legislature. They said Gov. Cuomo’s actions were a breach of public trust and should result in his immediate resignation.

Green Party: Lamont's new vaccine schedule is "shameful"

HARTFORD, CT – On the day that the United States marked one-half million Covid-19 deaths, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont announced a new vaccine schedule. While the schedule prioritizes vaccination of educators and school staff, it is otherwise age-based, contrary to the schedule suggested by the CDC and followed by other states. Lamont is quoted as saying that the goal is to "get as many people vaccinated as quickly as we can."

Connecticut Green Party responds to Gov. Lamont's "unimaginative" budget

  • Lamont's budget sells out working people, democracy, and the planet;

  • Green Party of Connecticut says "Tax the rich, free the people, save the planet"

HARTFORD, CT – Like most working people in Connecticut, we in the Green Party of Connecticut are disappointed but not surprised by the lackluster, unimaginative, business-as-usual tone of Governor Lamont's proposed budget. Imagination is fostered by freedom, and any plan for Connecticut's future that prioritizes keeping rich people safe from paying their fair share of taxes will begin its political life bound hand and foot to the status quo.

Green Party of New York calls for impeachment of Gov. Andrew Cuomo

ALBANY, NY - The Green Party of New York today called for the impeachment of Gov. Andrew Cuomo after shocking revelations that his administration purposefully lied to the public for political purposes about the level of deaths in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Party officials said this information coupled with the initial orders by the governor that forced nursing homes to admit over 9,000 recovering coronavirus patients and led to over 15,000 deaths in those facilities is enough to warrant an impeachment and trial of the governor.

URGENT: Contact Gov. Cooper Today!

PITTSBORO, NC – As you may know, Greens in North Carolina are in jeopardy of losing our registered Green voter status. That means the North Carolina Green Party (NCGP) may have to collect over 14,000 petition signatures in order to regain our legal party status, and with it our ballot access and the ability for people in North Carolina to register as Green voters again.

Regardless of the obstacle, the NCGP will be running several candidates at the local level this year. But right now, we need your support: please contact Governor Cooper and ask for Executive Relief due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Make '99% Herd Immunity' our battle cry

Disasters are usually avoidable. Weeks before Mount Vesuvius buried Pompeii and Herculaneum (A.D. 79), Bay of Naples sea floors boiled and bubbled, streams and wells near the volcano went dry, and rats and other animals left both cities in droves.

In 1985, a year before it exploded, engineers at Morton Thiokol warned about Challenger's O-rings. At temps below freezing, they insisted, O-ring rubber could stiffen and rocket booster sections might not seal. When Bob Eberling, Roger Boisjoly, Arnold Thompson and Allan McDonald asked to delay the space shuttle's launch for warmer weather, they were overruled. Bending to press and political pressures, executives stuck to their "go-mode" schedule, and the Challenger rocketed to oblivion on a cold January morn.

Hawkins Says the Green Opposition to the Next Administration Begins Now

Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate for president, said that while it was essential to ensure that all votes are counted before a winner is declared, it was equally important for people to demand that the next president move quickly on COVID relief, climate change, and health care for all.

Hawkins said that he and the Green Party would help organize protests to demand that every vote is counted and that the next administration take swift action on the COVID, health, and climate crises. Hawkins released a statement outlining key issues for the Green Party moving forward.

NCGP: The SCOTUS hearing sham and the need for a mass party of the left

The Amy Coney Barrett confirmation hearings do not support the so-called “Lesser Evil” argument. In fact the sham of a SCOTUS confirmation absolutely underscores the necessity for us to build a mass party independent of Wall Street power which can actually organize and lead millions to fight back. The party of labor and ecology that we need would be calling upon and organizing workers and unions to strike, protest and truly resist the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett. This is the kind of mass party that we desperately need today. Instead, we have two ruling parties that do the opposite – they both organize in meeting rooms to put down labor resistance and militant protests.

Pandemic living

  • The Long Haul

After all these months and 210,000 deaths, you’d think I’d be used to it all, but I’m not. It doesn’t seem even a little normal yet. I’m still full of absences, missing so much I used to take for granted: hugs and handshakes, rooms crowded for funerals and weddings, potluck dinners and house parties. I miss browsing the stacks at the library and the racks at the thrift shop. I miss going to our Unitarian Universalist congregation and the robust community connection we enjoyed every Sunday.

Trump is killing us

Trump should just resign. He should get out of the way of the public health officials who are telling us how to slow the spread of COVID-19, the health care providers who are trying to heal the sick, and the military and business managers who could quickly put together a plan under the Defense Production Act to produce and distribute needed medical resources to where they are urgently needed.

Trump had reports in January from the intelligence community and public health officials that the pandemic was coming. He told the American people that it was a Chinese problem, that it was another impeachment hoax, that it will disappear like a miracle. His late, deceitful, and misdirected response amounts to negligent homicide.
