The recent controversy over Facebook’s decision not to fact-check political ads by politicians — combined with Twitter’s decision not to run any — has shown how intertwined our political culture is with what are de-facto privately-owned, public information utilities. Whether and how to regulate social media giants - including whether to break them up and more - is a critical debate. But lost in this is that social media should be complementing what we do in the public domain, not replacing it nor filling its void. Continue reading

To the Editor: The "Democrats' Secret Plan to Kill Third Parties in New York," as the headline on an Oct. 29 New York Times report put it, is no longer secret. On Monday, Nov. 25, 2019, the Public Campaign Financing Commission voted to raise the vote threshold to secure a party ballot line from 50,000 to the higher of 130,000 or 2% every two years in gubernatorial and presidential years, instead of every four years in gubernatorial elections. They also tripled the petition signatures required to put an independent candidate for statewide office to 45,000. Continue reading

BLOOMINGTON, In. – A new branch of the Green Party in Monroe County could present candidates for local ballots as soon as the 2020 election. Potential new members have already had two meetings at the Monroe County Public Library to talk about the process of forming the party, which includes electing officers, creating bylaws and deciding what issues are currently most important to tackle. "I'm shocked we've got the kind of response we've seen," Randy Paul, who is leading the Green Party creation effort, said at the October meeting. Salt Lake City – An air quality and local agriculture activist who’s been fighting the development of the inland port announced his decision this month to throw his hat into the ring for Salt Lake County mayor in 2020. Michael Cundick, 33, is the first candidate to formally declare in the upcoming race, in which he plans to run on the Green Party ticket on a platform that promotes environmentalism as the solution to a broad range of issues facing the county. MUNCIE, In – A dozen Muncie City Council candidates took the stage at Muncie Central High School Thursday night. As IPR's Christine Hatfield reports, transparency and trust were among the major themes of the night's debate. Two of Muncie's six districts were unrepresented at the debate, because Districts Five and Six are unopposed races.
