(WDBJ) -- More than 200 people gathered Wednesday, waving signs and chanting things like, "Families belong together," all in the hopes their message would ring clear with Congressman Morgan Griffith of Virginia's 9th District. "We're here because this is our Congressman's office, who is completely unavailable," said demonstration participant Marian Mollin. Sen. Jon Tester of Montana was already facing a tough re-election battle in a state that Donald Trump won by a landslide — and then the Green Party made the Democrat’s job that much tougher by qualifying for the ballot. Now the Montana Democratic Party is scrambling to oust the Greens. It has asked a judge to decertify the left-wing party by declaring 180 petition signatures invalid for reasons such as bad handwriting, use of initials instead of full names and failure to write in cursive. When Rhoda Gilman passed away earlier this month at the age of 91, she left her mark on Minnesota history in more than one way. A longtime activist, Gilman helped found the Green Party of Minnesota, and she ran for lieutenant governor on its ticket at age 75. She was also a historian who wrote about topics ranging from the state's first governor, Henry Sibley, to the history of protest in Minnesota. Pledging to divest the state pension fund from fossil fuels, an environmental and anti-poverty activist announced on Thursday that he is running for state comptroller and seeking the Green Party ballot line. The activist, Mark Dunlea, is a co-founder of the Green Party and a town board member in Poestenkill.
