Ballot mishaps at primaries highlight third party struggle
As the votes from the 2018 primary elections are being finalized, the Illinois Green Party is complaining about the challenges third party political groups often face.
The Illinois Green Party criticized the conduct of Cook County poll workers during the primary after receiving reports that voters were not given Green Party ballots when requested. Green Party voters were instead told to choose between a Democrat or Republican ballot in at least nine of suburban Cook County townships, according to a March 20 press release from the party.

With Yellow Vests and an 'ICE-Sniffing Dog,' Activists Watch for Immigration Agents
Clad in fluorescent yellow vests, armed with pamphlets listing immigrants' rights and accompanied by a Golden Retriever named Emma, a small group of activists are patrolling the outside of a municipal court in Central New Jersey looking out for immigration agents.
A new Trump Administration directive allows Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers to enter courthouses to arrest immigrants who are there for unrelated reasons. As these operations have ramped up, lawyers and local officials have expressed outrage. The chief justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court even wrote a letter of complaint to the Justice Department, to no avail.

North Carolina Green Party becomes latest official party
RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina added the Green Party to its official political parties Tuesday, potentially giving voters more options this fall.
The state elections board voted unanimously to certify the North Carolina Green Party, whose candidates can now automatically be on state ballots through at least 2020. It joins North Carolina's other official parties — Democratic, Republican and Libertarian — for federal, state and local offices.

Up North Green Party to host viewing, discussion of sexual assault documentary
PETOSKEY — The Up North Green Party invites the public and interested Green voters for a viewing and discussion of the documentary film "The Hunting Ground" at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 22, at the Red Sky Stage, 445 E. Mitchell Street, Petoskey.
"The Hunting Ground," which premiered in 2015, documents the survivors of rape and sexual assault on the nation's college campuses through first-person testimonies and expert insights. The film follows two college activists who network with other survivors at colleges and universities around the country and use a Title IX legal strategy to fight the educational institutions that have tried to silence them.

Meet the Indigenous Woman Running for Arizona Senate
It's not every day a woman runs for Senate—and definitely not in Arizona. Eve Reyes-Aguirre won't let that deter her, though. The 42 year old is trying to become first woman senator in the state and the first indigenous woman senator, at that.
Reyes-Aguirre, an Izkaloteka Mexican Native who lives in Phoenix, is running as a third-party candidate with the Green Party and still needs to secure 1,000 signatures before she can appear on the ballot come November, but she's not worried. She's got until May and already has about 400.

Defense attorney captures courthouse shooting on cell phone, wants guns removed from court
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The defense attorney and Green Party gubernatorial candidate who shot cell phone video right after a teenager was fatally shot in juvenile court is calling for deputies in the courthouse to remove their guns.
Constance Gadell-Newton told ABC 6/FOX 28 that she was with her own juvenile client last Wednesday when she witnessed a verbal altercation turn physical in front of her. She said Joseph Haynes, 16, walked out of courtroom 56 clearly upset and Deputy Richard Scarborough followed right after him. Investigators said Haynes went to court Wednesday thinking that he'd have his ankle monitor removed. When that didn't happen, investigators said he became verbally abusive with court staff and his case was continued.

That is: why I'm a registered member of the Green Party of Louisiana, why I've actively organized a chapter of the Green Party here in New Orleans, and why I support a broader Green movement.
