Activist Rosa Clemente speaks at UMass on International Women's Day

AMHERST — Throughout much of the world, International Women's Day garners widespread attention and demonstrations. But the holiday has not yet gained the same level of notoriety here in the United States. Members of several campus organizations at the University of Massachusetts hoped to do their part in raising the day's profile by organizing an event titled "Press for Progress" Thursday evening in the Student Union. Meet the Indigenous Woman Running for Arizona Senate

It's not every day a woman runs for Senate—and definitely not in Arizona. Eve Reyes-Aguirre won't let that deter her, though. The 42 year old is trying to become first woman senator in the state and the first indigenous woman senator, at that. Reyes-Aguirre, an Izkaloteka Mexican Native who lives in Phoenix, is running as a third-party candidate with the Green Party and still needs to secure 1,000 signatures before she can appear on the ballot come November, but she's not worried. She's got until May and already has about 400. Continue reading

Defense attorney captures courthouse shooting on cell phone, wants guns removed from court

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The defense attorney and Green Party gubernatorial candidate who shot cell phone video right after a teenager was fatally shot in juvenile court is calling for deputies in the courthouse to remove their guns. Constance Gadell-Newton told ABC 6/FOX 28 that she was with her own juvenile client last Wednesday when she witnessed a verbal altercation turn physical in front of her. She said Joseph Haynes, 16, walked out of courtroom 56 clearly upset and Deputy Richard Scarborough followed right after him. Investigators said Haynes went to court Wednesday thinking that he'd have his ankle monitor removed. When that didn't happen, investigators said he became verbally abusive with court staff and his case was continued. Continue reading

Why I'm Green

I've dithered and dickered and dillied and dallied and skirted the issue for long enough. I think it is high time to articulate for once and for all just why I'm Green. That is: why I'm a registered member of the Green Party of Louisiana, why I've actively organized a chapter of the Green Party here in New Orleans, and why I support a broader Green movement. Continue reading

How will vacant Syracuse council seat be filled?

Former Green Party Syracuse councilor at-large candidate Frank Cetera is calling for an open process to fill a soon-to-be vacant seat on the council. The issue stems from another council appointment that was made two years ago. In 2015, the council voted to appoint Democrat Joe Nicoletti to a vacant seat. Cetera said Nicoletti's appointment was made with no public notice or consideration of the candidates who ran for council that year. Continue reading

Dr. Jill Stein: Green Party not to blame for Trump's election

PROVIDENCE — There's an argument going around that last year's presidential election would have turned out differently if Dr. Jill Stein wasn't in the race. Some contend that if voters in a few Midwestern states who cast their ballots for the Green Party candidate chose Hillary Clinton instead, the Democrat would be in the White House right now, instead of Republican Donald Trump. Green Party wins leave state, town officials scrambling to accommodate them

Waterford, CT — Nobody expected Waterford's Green Party to win this much. Members of the party — which only elected its first candidate to a town board two years ago — on Tuesday secured four seats on Waterford's Representative Town Meeting and one seat on the Zoning Board of Appeals, and Democratic candidates cross-endorsed by the Green Party won seats on the school board, the Board of Assessment Appeals and an alternate seat on the Zoning Board of Appeals. Howie Hawkins' persistent, all-encompassing platform is what will save Syracuse

With the country's highest level of poverty concentration among blacks and Hispanics, an above-average high school dropout rate and a massive load of debt, Syracuse is in a state of disarray. Among the city's mayoral candidates, only Howie Hawkins has the radical, progressive solutions to correct the unfair treatment many Syracuse residents face. The race's other candidates — Republican Laura Lavine, Democrat Juanita Perez Williams and independent Ben Walsh — have only presented mainstream solutions to these longstanding problems. But Hawkins has been an advocate for change his entire life, and has always taken the road less traveled. Continue reading
