Response to Non-convictions in the Philando Castile and Sam Dubose

I think it would be remiss for the Green Party not to address recent non-convictions in the cases of Philando Castile and Sam Dubose this past week. It is quite evident, in my opinion, the tainted complexities of our democracy. The corruption of police or policing is only a symptom as is our current administration. With that being said, the harsh reality is more police will be acquitted. It is apparent that democracy only serves and protects certain groups and classes of people. The prosecution of policemen seems to be hindered by the very laws that are supposed to protect ALL citizens. There are major institutional, social and legal impediments to law enforcement being held accountable for the crimes they commit. It is a very complicated and sophisticated task. The difficulty seems to be intentional. So must our pushback. But before we can resist we must find ourselves out of this labyrinth of defeat. Continue reading

A Small Victory

First, I wanted to let everyone know that the bills we opposed in the state legislature, which aimed to hamper the removal of monuments to white supremacy, did not pass. This is a small victory, to be sure, but it's the first time our local group has looked at specific state legislation. We can see that there is much more to do if we are to advance a Green agenda through the legislative process. Second, I wanted to remind you that our special session on bylaws is coming up on Saturday. RSVP on our website. Bylaws are necessary for the progress and sustainability of our local Green Party chapter. In advance, please peruse these organizing ideas from the national Green Party. Continue reading

A couple of months ago, at one of our meetings, it was determined by consensus to reach out to a particular area of the county to investigate opportunities for service and, potentially, to make a larger impact on the political front. The Northside was chosen as the spot that we would try to gain more familiarity and to participate, as we can, in community activities of special focus on the Northside. Continue reading
